Next month, I plan to run a piece titled “Work Sucks For Everyone.” [edit, never happened, the idea merged into “Work, Identity, and Annoyances”] The piece will be inspired by various discourses I see surrounding the workplace: company culture, burn-out, unfairness towards women and minorities, etc. I support most of these efforts, but I think they need to exist alongside an understanding that 1) people have to do stuff and 2) some of this stuff kinda sucks. We need to accept some of the inherent crappiness of work while trying to improve it. We can’t all do cool and fun work all the time. I would also appreciate a similar understanding from potential employers, which would involve them not sending recruitment ads like this one.
The email is title Wanna be a Power Ranger??
Hey [Klaus],
Yeah, we’ve thought about it too - those suits just don’t breathe enough. But I am here to offer the 7th next best thing - working with the team that makes the Power Rangers video games! That’s right, you could be responsible for helping make the decisions of which colored, skin tight, heat trapping suit players start out with, or if there really are too many rocks on that level.
[Company] is the developer and publisher of such games as Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, and Power Rangers: Legacy Wars, and Battlepalooza (ok, so this one isn’t with the Power Rangers, but it’s still fun). Now, I know what you’re thinking - “I think this email went to the wrong person,” and, “I work with Data,” and “What am I having for dinner?” Well, do not fret! This email was meant for you, they're looking for a [Role], and pasta (maybe with some garlic, a bit of cream, definitely some oregano).
[Company] is looking for a [Role] to join their [Team] team. You will build and maintain the data pipelines, connecting to various data sources and using them to create a unified view of the products and how they are used.
Your work will help the company make better decisions. Just like the Rangers always try to get stronger, faster, better, [Company] is doing the same by transitioning to Web3 and building out a platform for competitive multiplayer games with play to earn features. This could be a great fit if you have any of the following:
[relevant technical skills]
Think you would actually look good in one of those Ranger suits
If this sounds exciting, I would love to set up a call to chat about your experience and see if [Company] is the spot for you. Is it Morphin' Time for your career?
That’s all; I just thought you needed to see this. I will pray that it’s spam, but it comes from a legit recruiting firm and references a legit role.
"Is it Morphin' Time for your career?" made me laugh aloud. Good lord.
For some reason this just showed up in the app. Brilliant. Is there a name for that very specific type of humor? Corporate nerd humor is not quite dadjoke level of cringe but it's close.
